Collaborative Academics

A STEM University means that all of the fields and programs that are involved in STEM has hands-on components. There's a lot of opportunity for all of us to work together on research projects, as well as things that will help to foster and make better courses that the students can share and learn from each other. It's very collaborative here at the university because we have eight core competencies, one of which is teamwork and collaboration. So students are assessed on their ability to work in teams and collaborate not only in individual courses but across their experiential learning opportunities. One example of students coming from multiple majors, are our field studies experiences. Our Geospatial Technology Program has collaborated for a long time with a local university in the humanities for digital history, even doing archaeological expeditions to Greece with students from archaeology and history classes from other institutions. So really trying to expose students to a lot of different things and understand how the technology they may study in their program has applicability across lots of industries. Harrisburg provides a lot of opportunities for students to go outside of their program and look at their interests that way. So say they want to take an interactive media course or they want to take a management, entrepreneurship, or business administration course, they're able to do that through their free electives. There are definitely opportunities for students to explore beyond their majors here at Harrisburg.
